Simultaneous Observations of Turbulent Reynolds Stress in the Ocean Surface Boundary Layer and Wind Stress over the Sea Surface

چکیده

This study used high-frequency acoustic instruments mounted on an offshore observation platform to obtain simultaneous in situ measurements of sea surface winds and ocean currents. The acquired data were compare quantitatively the turbulent Reynolds stress boundary layer (OSBL) wind over surface. During period (∼10 d), state was largely dominated by swell breaking waves. eddy covariance method estimate two stresses. A combination synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT) a moving average employed for wave-turbulence decomposition oceanic velocities. Results showed that OSBL is affected greatly gravity waves it scales with wave characteristics. Direct comparison revealed could be larger than certain circumstances, which differs from traditional view former cannot greater latter. In extreme cases, their ratio can up one order magnitude. Therefore, we conclude enhance significantly OSBL.

Sea Surface Wind/Stress Vector

Definition Wind is air in motion and is basically a vector quantity with a magnitude (speed) and a direction. Ocean surface stress is another vector quantity closely related to wind; it is the turbulent transfer of momentum between the ocean and the atmosphere. Their different applications are summarized in the section "Scientific Significance".

Investigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...

Constraining Wind Stress Products with Sea Surface Height Observations and Implications for Pacific Ocean Sea Level Trend Attribution*

A number of global surface wind datasets are available that are commonly used to examine climate variability or trends and as boundary conditions for ocean circulation models. However, discrepancies exist among these products. This study uses observed Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic (AVISO) sea surface height anomalies (SSHAs) as a means to help constrain th...
